On Friday, July 10th, the Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation proudly cut the ribbon at Walker Mill Regional Park’s new crown jewel – a 12,000 square foot concrete skatepark.
While this celebration marked the official opening, skateboarders from throughout Maryland & Virginia had already been flocking to District Heights for months for a firsthand taste of the fast lines and innovative terrain. Word on the street is that these skateboarders were not disappointed.
The County utilized a streamlined design/build approach with Spohn Ranch acting as both prime architect and general contractor. After a skatepark design process that blended the site’s dramatic topography with flowing curves and modern street elements, we executed the full spectrum of construction – from bioretention and ADA pathways to shotcrete and steel fabrication.
Colored concrete, shade sails and artistic spectator seating add to the skatepark’s modern aesthetic.
Stay tuned for upcoming projects in Prince George’s County, as well PG’s neighbor Howard County.
