Mattano Park Skatepark in Elizabeth, New Jersey has joined the modern era.
A collection of steel ramps served the community well for many years, but new skatepark design trends and the escalating maintenance demands of steel ramps made it clear it was time to upgrade to concrete.
A collaboration between Union County, the City of Elizabeth, Suburban Consulting Engineers and Spohn Ranch removed the ramps, fence and asphalt and converted to a contemporary concrete skatepark. The highlight of the new Mattano Park Skatepark is an above-grade bowl with hips, extensions and a mini-ramp section that pays homage to the old skatepark.
The skatepark design contrasts well with our 2013 design/build project in Elizabeth’s Holland Park – a pure street plaza with no transition elements.
New York photographer (and Thrasher Magazine cover boy) Mike Heikkila captured some great shots of the skatepark just as a nasty storm was creeping in.
Located just outside of New York City, the Mattano Park Skatepark has officially re-opened. Enjoy!
