The City of Santa Fe’s new skatepark is now open!
After a several-year journey, on July 29, 2017, Santa Fe’s skateboarding community celebrated the official opening of the Genoveva Chavez Skatepark – located just north of the Genoveva Chavez Community Center with an official address of 3221 Rodeo Rd. Santa Fe, NM 87507.
At the beginning of the project, Spohn Ranch hosted two design workshops with local skateboarders, ensuring the final product reflected the community’s preferences. We also created a custom Facebook group, to keep the lines of communication open and provide progress updates.
Our final scope included skatepark design, stormwater management, earthwork, steel fabrication, concrete/shotcrete, landscaping and lighting.
The final result? A modern 9,000 square foot skatepark accented with classic southwest colors. The three lobed bowl, sizing up at 4’, 5’ and 7’ deep comes complete with a double waterfall and a middle section boasting an 8′ (slightly over-vert) cradle. With pockets and hips galore, this bowl will challenge beginner through advanced riders for decades to come.
Not to be overshadowed, the street course also packs a punch. It features an extra-long manual pad combo, stairs, a-frame, flat rail, hubba ledge, bump-to-ledge and a 2-way pole jam. Opposite the street course is a long section of quarter-pipe anchored by a central bank that pays homage Santa Fe’s iconic Pueblo-style architecture.
It was a true honor contributing a skateable landmark to Santa Fe’s beautiful landscape.
Now, on to the next one!
