A stone’s throw east of Los Angeles lies the City of Rosemead – home to over 50,000 residents, but up until 3/25/17, no skatepark. As one of the last Los Angeles-area cities without a public skatepark, city officials knew if they were going to wait this long, they had to do it right. First step was contacting the professional skatepark builders at Spohn Ranch.
The project began with two public design workshops where local skateboarders provided input regarding skill levels and desired obstacles. That community input was then combined with a thorough site analysis focused on preserving trees and blending the design into the natural topography of the space.
After a bit of civil engineering and execution of technical construction documents, the project shifted to construction where Spohn Ranch’s scope consisted of steel fabrication and specialty construction of skate elements.
The 12,000 square foot, V-shaped skatepark officially opened on March 25th and boasts well-balanced terrain. The west end of the park features a central elevated area with a variety of street elements and elevation changes. The east end of the park is connected via a winding snake run intended to replicate a drainage ditch.
The reviews have been pouring in and have all been 5-star – both from local residents and the professional skateboarders flocking there on regular basis. The Zumiez Best Foot Forward competition series is also hosting an upcoming event at the facility, another testament to the quality of the skatepark design.
