This one isn’t just a skatepark. This is a permanent tribute to the legacy of Prescott Lee Goodman and a testament to the spirit of a small community who came together in the face of heartbreak.
After a tragic accident with an automobile cut the 15-year-old’s life short, Prescott’s family formed the “Bikes With Wings” Foundation with the mission of building a safe place for Mt. Washington, Kentucky’s skateboarders and BMX bike riders.
The Foundation quickly recognized that Spohn Ranch was the missing puzzle piece – a firm with decades of experience designing and building BMX terrain.
The design workshop we hosted for local riders confirmed the Mt. Washington scene was dominated by BMX, an interesting change of pace compared to our typical skateboarding-influenced project. Input from that meeting led to a flowing concrete space with a 4.5-6’ L-shaped bowl and an array of BMX staples including rollers, a jump box, spine, wall-ride and sub-box.
Knowing skateboarders from surrounding communities would ride the park either way, we also included a few key street elements such as a long ledge, a flat rail and an a-frame.
The facility official opened in late April and is now open to the public. It was an honor sculpting concrete in memory of Mt. Washington, Kentucky’s most promising BMX bike rider.
