The Jewett Park Skatepark’s highly-anticipated renovation is complete and will officially open to the public on July 6. While Spohn Ranch’s skatepark construction scope was completed last fall, the skatepark was just one component of a larger revitalization project for Deerfield’s Jewett Park, so local skateboarders had to wait patiently for the rest of the project to wrap up.
The Jewett Park Skatepark was one of Illinois’ first concrete skateparks when it was originally constructed 20 years ago and while the choice of concrete was progressive for the time, flawed geometry and awkward layout left much to be desired. So when the Deerfield Park District and local landscape architect Planning Resources, Inc. approached us about a design-build project, we understood we had to bring this skatepark into the modern era, while also paying homage to the skatepark’s history.
Two of the original skatepark’s most iconic features were the open-ended bowl and the long double-sided curb. Modern versions of these features became the anchors of our new skatepark design and were surrounded with a mix of street and transition-style terrain – all with proper geometry and spacing.
Smooth concrete expertly placed by Spohn Ranch’s ACI-certified shotcrete nozzlemen will also be a welcome break from the weather-ravaged concrete local skateboarders had been dealing with for years.
There are dozens of other outdated skateparks in Illinois, so now onto the next one! And if one of those skateparks is in your community, drop us a line and let us know how we can help.
