Spohn Ranch and our client of two decades, the City of Los Angeles, are teaming up for a new concrete skatepark at Harbor City Park in Harbor City, California. The 11,000 square foot skatepark will occupy an under-utilized space in the southwest corner of the park, at the intersection of Lomita Boulevard and Belle Porte Avenue.
After several years of behind-the-scenes work from the City’s Department of Recreation and Parks, Councilman Joe Buscaino and local advocacy groups, we kicked off the project by meeting with Harbor City skateboarders to discuss their vision for the skatepark design. That meeting directly shaped the final design and ensures the local skateboard community takes care of the skatepark for decades to come.
The final design features Spohn Ranch’s signature design principles – a smart blend of street and transition-style terrain, an architectural design aesthetic and obstacles that speak to the full spectrum of skill levels.
The Harbor City Skatepark will encompass three distinct areas – a 3-lobed bowl with depths of 5’ and 7’, a linear-shaped space with beginner street obstacles and an open flow area with a mix of stair sets, quarter-pipes and winding banks. These areas are separated just enough to efficiently accommodate large crowds of skateboarders and bike riders, while still allowing flow between the areas for the days when the skatepark isn’t as crowded.
Construction blueprints are currently in-process and construction will officially begin in early 2019. Construction is expected to last 3-4 months, with a grand opening target of mid-late summer. Stay tuned for updates!
