McBride Skatepark Grand Opening in the LBC

Spohn Ranch’s fifth skatepark for the City of Long Beach celebrated its official grand opening this past weekend. It was an amazing day for Long Beach skateboarding and was summed up incredibly well by the Tony Hawk Foundation here.

“Tony Hawk and a group of pro athletes joined about 300 city officials and local youth on Saturday for the grand opening of the Ernest McBride Skatepark in Long Beach, California. The Poly High neighborhood, where the skatepark is located, is home to one of the country’s most diverse urban communities, yet few recreational opportunities are available for its youth. The new 10,000-square-foot skate plaza is considered by local leaders as the area’s best chance to keep kids active, healthy, and safe from gangs and crime.

Spearheaded by former Long Beach City Council Member Mike Donelon and the nonprofit Action Sports Kids (ASK Long Beach) organization, the McBride Skatepark was a collaboration between the city, its citizens, and local advocacy groups. “The City Of Long Beach understands the benefits of skateparks, and is a huge supporter of the kids who ride them,” says Donelon. “Today was the climax of our skatepark program. With the help of the Tony Hawk Foundation, we built a world-class skatepark that is going to keep kids out of gangs and off drugs, and will help them stay active and get along.”

Tony Hawk presented the McBride Skatepark at THF’s Stand Up For Skateparks event in Beverly Hills in 2010, where he helped raise $45,000 for the project. Long Beach has been a leader in providing its at-risk youth with safe, quality public skateparks, and the McBride Skatepark is the latest addition to its ongoing skatepark program.

“It’s an excellent street-plaza design, with just enough transitions to make it well-rounded,” says Hawk. “It has something for all skill levels, and is exactly the type of project, area, and advocacy that we want to get involved with. It should be an example for other communities to follow.”

After a few brief speeches, Hawk and fellow celebrity skaters Geoff Rowley, Ron Chatman, Riley Hawk, Danny Gonzalez, Daewon Song, Chad Tim Tim, Clive Dixon, and Danny Montoya, plus BMXers Aaron Ross, Dakota Roche, and Gabe Brooks ripped through the park, demonstrating its potential before being joined by the hundreds of local youth who were keen to have their turn. “It was a blast,” says Hawk. “The kids were so eager to skate that we cut our demo short to let them in.”

Of the nearly 500 skateparks the Tony Hawk Foundation has helped to fund, the Ernest McBride Skatepark is the 417th to open. It’s a free, open-access facility that welcomes all wheeled youth—skateboarders, BMXers,

Throughout the development of the skatepark—from planning to fundraising to design—local youth were engaged and integral to the process. Now that their efforts have resulted in Long Beach’s latest public amenity, they can take pride in knowing that they helped create it. As both the City Of Long Beach and the Tony Hawk Foundation have understood for more than a decade, involving the youth in the process of developing the skatepark, and allowing them to invest their time and effort in the project, is the best way to ensure the park’s long-term success.

And the kids who were previously chased by police for riding their skateboards on city streets learned a thing or two about how local government can work for them; the skatepark stands as a concrete reminder of what they’ve accomplished through collaboration, cooperation, and compromise.”

“Heart of the Sun” Art Installation – Queens, NY

The project we first shared in July of 2011 is officially complete.  Well, it’s not really skateable, but this unique project uses skatepark elements to create an interactive art installation. Conceived and designed by local artist Chris Green, this permanent outdoor art installation was commissioned by the NYC School Construction Authority for PS/IS 48 Q’s new school building in Jamaica, Queens. Spohn Ranch worked with Chris to select the proper elements and with our fabrication process nearly complete, they will be installed by Chris and his team within a few weeks.

“As the piece was installed in a heavily shaded west facing courtyard, the artwork marks various points on the annual calendar by reflecting sunlight from roof-mounted mirrors onto a series of GFRC walls. Etched into the concrete surfaces of the curved walls are 52 student-generated artworks showing the sun as a personified symbol – a petroglyphic style dating back to the Neolithic. The reflected sunlight passes over these engravings at various points in the day and year when the courtyard is darkest. Designs and sun symbols were generated in collaboration with 2nd grade students at the school over the course of a twenty-week residency.

This site-specific installation provides teachers as PS/IS 48 a vast resource for educational programs in astronomy, art history, geometry, social sciences, and ecology.”

Red Bull Mississippi Grind Finals in New Orleans

The floating concrete skatepark we designed and built for Red Bull made its way down to New Orleans, Louisiana this past weekend for the final event of the Red Bull Mississippi Grind. Hosting contests at stops along the Mississippi River route, the NOLA event featured the top eight skaters from the previous stops in St. Paul, Minnesota, Davenport, Iowa and St. Louis, Missouri.

A beautiful City, a passionate crowd and some amazing skateboarding talent made this an incredible event. To make a great story even greater, the first Mississippi Grind event series is concluding with the donation of the concrete elements to the City of New Orleans for their first public skatepark. With corporate sponsors like Red Bull giving back like this, the future of skateboarding looks very bright!  Photos from the whole journey can be found here.

Barge Skatepark Floats On!

The Red Bull Mississippi Grind is in full swing as the Spohn Ranch concrete skatepark makes it way down the Mississippi River over the next few weeks. The event kicked off in St. Paul, Minnesota as twenty of the state’s top skateboarders competed for the “Ticket to Ride” that would propel them to the final competition in New Orleans. A host of Red Bull and Converse-sponsored professional skateboarders, including Kenny Anderson, Joey Brezinski and Luis Tolentino, have also been enjoying life on the barge and performing demos at the different stops.

This past weekend was particularly exciting as the barge rolled into Davenport, Iowa for the second major stop of the tour. Davenport local and close friend of the Spohn Ranch family, Ben Otting, qualified first in the contest and is now packing his bags for New Orleans!

As this innovative Red Bull/Spohn Ranch collaboration continues to make its way down the Mississippi River, it will make a stop in St. Louis, Missouri for another big local event before heading to New Orleans for the grand finale. And to top off this amazing story, the concrete elements will be donated by Spohn Ranch to the City of New Orleans and incorporated into a new public skatepark. Stay tuned for more updates from the Mississippi!

“Heart of the Sun” Installation – Queens, New York

Well, it’s not really skateable, but this unique project uses skatepark elements to create an interactive art installation. Conceived and designed by local artist Chris Green, this permanent outdoor art installation was commissioned by the NYC School Construction Authority for PS/IS 48 Q’s new school building in Jamaica, Queens.

Borrowing from the calendrical nature of archaeological sites such as Newgrange, Stonehenge, and various Egyptian temples, the installation will mark various points on the annual calendar by reflecting sunlight onto a series of curved walls in a primarily shaded courtyard. The building’s own walls and flagpole will additionally act as gnomons to chart the seasons as their shadows meet specific ground markers.

Spohn Ranch worked with Chris to select the proper elements and with our fabrication process nearly complete, they will be installed by Chris and his team within a few weeks.

Tony Hawk Foundation Chooses Long Beach

This past week, the Tony Hawk Foundation announced that they have chosen Long Beach’s McBride Skatepark as their spotlight project for the year.  The Stand Up for Skateparks event in October will help raise funds for the new 12,000-14,000 square foot concrete skatepark being designed and built by Spohn Ranch.

“We are honored and excited that the Tony Hawk Foundation has chosen McBride Skatepark,” said 6th District Councilmember Dee Andrews. “The additional funding will allow us to provide a world-class skate park for the community. Helping us give kids an alternative to the streets is what the project is all about. With the Tony Hawk Foundation in the mix we have the opportunity to create even more energy, excitement and pride from the kids and the community involved in the skatepark.”

“Long Beach has a strong history in supporting youth who choose skateboarding and BMX as their sports of choice,” said Tony Hawk Foundation Executive Director Miki Vuckovich. ” Over a decade ago the city’s leaders took the initiative to provide these safe havens for kids to go, ride, and remain engaged in something positive and healthy. Tony and our Board of Directors are proud to have the opportunity to share Long Beach’s story and show our support in this way.”

Since 2003, Spohn Ranch has been proud to assist the City of Long Beach with their skatepark planning efforts.  The Mcbride Skatepark will be Spohn Ranch’s fifth skatepark in Long Beach, continuing the tradition of high-quality skateboarding environments.  In the following weeks, Spohn Ranch will be collaborating with some of Long Beach’s top professional skaters to develop the design for what will surely become one of Southern California’s premiere skateparks.  Stay tuned as the design work pushes ahead!

EA Sports – Skate 3 Commercial Shoot

Spohn Ranch was hired back in April to build a custom vert-ramp for a high-profile commercial shoot. Check out the final commercial for EA Sports’ upcoming video game “Skate 3″.

EA Sports – Skate 3 Commercial Shoot

In early April of 2010, Spohn Ranch Skateparks was approached by Imperial Woodpecker, a production company that was shooting a commercial for the EA Sports video game franchise. The commercial for Skate 3 called for the construction of a custom half-pipe.

Calling upon 18+ years of skatepark construction and design experience, the Spohn Ranch Special Events division erected a 13’ vert ramp on a tight schedule and with the highest of quality. The commercial called for a “rugged-looking” half-pipe with decks that could accommodate at least 20 skaters. As the leader in custom ramp fabrication for special events and commercial shoots, Spohn Ranch relied on proven safety and engineering principles to ensure the ramp could perform at the highest level.

To see Spohn Ranch’s vert ramp in action, stay tuned for the full commercial and don’t forget to pick up EA Skate 3 – hitting stores May 11th!  To see more shots from the shoot, click the photo above.

Fort Irwin Skatepark Grand Opening

Click the photo above to see shots of the festivities from the Grand Opening of the new concrete skatepark at the Fort Irwin Military Base in Southern California.

The turnout for the event was unbelievable, with a crowd of over 300 skaters, parents, soldiers, and community members.  Fort Irwin/National Training Center Commanding General Brig. Gen. Robert “Abe” Abrams, son of the legendary General Creighton Abrams, was on hand to give an inspirational speech to the skaters about respecting the park and their fellow skaters.

“There are not enough words to adequately say thank you to each and every one of you for your support of our Fort Irwin Community. People on post can only say wonderful things about the design, the project and the incredible skaters who showed up for the event. Each of you made a huge difference in the lives of our Soldiers and their families yesterday. The skatepark is having a huge impact on our children and soldiers who need a place for recreation.” said Jackie Hoggins, Marketing Chief at Fort Irwin.

Read below for the story of how this skatepark project came to fruition.

New Skatepark at Military Base Boosts Soliders’ Morale

Permission to shred sir? Permission granted soldier! With the help of Spohn Ranch Skateparks, the new 15,000 square foot concrete skatepark at the Fort Irwin Military Base in Southern California is being hailed as a tremendous success.

Fort Irwin, located just outside of Barstow in the remote Southern California desert, is the premiere National Training Center for all branches of the US Military. All military personnel being deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan must first complete Desert Warfare training at Fort Irwin, which amounts to a large population of soldiers and family members on base looking for ways to occupy their spare time. After the idea of a new skatepark kept popping up at the family advocacy meetings, the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Department at Fort Irwin partnered with Spohn Ranch Skateparks, based in Industry, California, to build a skatepark that they could be really proud of.

The “Grind & Shred Skatepark”, as it was named by the skaters on base, replaced a much smaller existing skatepark that consisted of a few inadequate steel ramps. “Working with an experienced skatepark company like Spohn Ranch was very crucial,” said Jackie Hoggins, Marketing Chief at Fort Irwin. “They know the newest trends and how to design a skatepark that skaters young and old will love.” Spohn Ranch has worked with the US Military on skatepark projects across the globe, having completed skateparks at military installations in New Mexico, Japan, and most recently at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba.

The skatepark is already being met with tremendous praise because of the benefits it will provide for different groups on base. “For the 12-18 year old age group, which is very difficult to keep entertained, the skatepark will provide the perfect venue for exercising and having fun,” said Maarten Voogd of Water Ventures, the contract holder of the project. With a parental figure absent and traditional sports becoming less popular, activities like skateboarding are a great way to keep kids’ minds focused on something positive. Failing to provide this vulnerable age group with facilities for the activities they enjoy leads to them finding less productive ways to spend their time.

For single soldiers on base who often feel left out of activity planning, the skatepark will also provide a new venue for social interaction and relaxation. Most important of all is the way in which the skatepark will become a critical piece of the family support structure. Soldiers can be much more focused on their work knowing their family is safe and occupying their time with positive activities. “Although it may seem obscure to some, we are proud to do our part in supporting the troops that are fighting for our freedom around the world,” said Aaron Spohn, founder and president of Spohn Ranch Skateparks.

The skatepark’s grand opening is set for Wednesday August 26, and will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony, professional demos and a best trick contest.

Skateable Art Benches for Gatorade Free Flow Tour

Gatorade recently approached us about building benches for the 30 skateparks across the country that are part of the Gatorade Free Flow Tour. We fabricated wave benches made of galvanized steel and surfaced with Skatelite for each skatepark on the tour, which is going on right now. After the tour these benches will be given as gifts to the skateparks, where they will become permanent fixtures.

Click the photo above to see shots of the last Gatorade bench before it was shipped off to the Jaycee Skatepark in Joplin, Missouri.  With the addition of skateboarding phenoms Sean Malto and Chaz Ortiz to its team, Gatorade has made a pretty impressive entrance into the skateboarding world.

The Spohn Ranch construction crew has been working hard under the scorching desert sun to replace a small setup of steel ramps with a 15,000 square foot concrete skatepark. More info on this project and the grand opening will be coming soon.

Gatorade Benches Coming In Hot

Clips of skaters shredding the wave benches we designed and built for the Gatorade Free Flow Tour are popping up all over the internet these days.  Check out this little clip of Anthony Shetler going to work.  Are concrete versions of this skateable art piece already in the works?….You’ll have to stay tuned to find out.

Mini-ramp Installation for Reese’s Puffs commercial

Completed ramp, originally uploaded by spohnranchskateparks.

Since the dawn of time we’ve always known that there’s no wrong way to eat a Reese’s, but when it comes to installing mini-ramps, there’s only one right way. That’s why Spohn Ranch was hired in early March for a Reese’s Puffs Cereal television commercial shoot in South Pasadena, California. Spohn Ranch possesses several mini-ramps, half-pipes, and other obstacles that are often rented by companies for video shoots and events. By using Spohn Ranch, these companies do not have to worry about the complications of building or installing a ramp themselves.

After being contacted by the production company, Spohn Ranch’s Mark Bradford and Eddie Osgood got to work – loading the pieces of the ramp from the Spohn Ranch warehouse in the City of Industry onto a truck for transport. After a quick drive to the shooting location, Bradford, Osgood, and the rest of the Spohn Ranch crew unloaded the pieces of the mini-ramp off the truck and carefully carried them into the backyard of a beautiful Pasadena home.

Once in the backyard, the crew began setting up the 6-foot-tall and 18-foot-wide steel ramp in preparation for the Reese’s Puffs’ inspired shredding that would soon occur. Using an innovative truss system designed by Spohn Ranch founder, Aaron Spohn, the ramp was raised to eight feet and then surfaced with a layer of Masonite to achieve a clean cinematic look.

Upon completion of the installation, the ramp was painted with the official Reese’s colors and logos and was finally ready to be skated. The skater hired by Reese’s blasted giant airs with ease and slashed long grinds across the coping for the commercial, which capitalized on the increasing popularity of skateboarding among Reese’s target market. The ramp’s glory was short lived though, after only one day of skating, the ramp was disassembled and returned to the warehouse where it would remain until someone else needed the help of Spohn Ranch for quick and precise mini-ramp installation.

Spohn Ranch helps bulldogs skate at the Rose Parade

The skateboarding bulldog!, originally uploaded by theMaykazine.

Spohn Ranch was proud to provide the ramp course for Natural Balance’s float in the Rose Parade, featuring the skateboarding bulldogs Tillman and Tyson.

After building the course at our Los Angeles fabrication shop, we got to host various training sessions where the bulldogs came out to practice.

Again, Spohn Ranch is the #1 choice to build high profile action sports structures, whether human or canine.

Spohn Ranch Custom Ramp Featured in Shaun White Ad

The new Shaun White promo videos are up at HP.com.

Shaun joins an elite group of pro athletes (Tony Hawk, Bob Burnquist, Danny Way, etc…) who use Spohn Ranch for their high-profile projects.

The videos are funny and short, and even feature a little skating.

Sure, the haters will hate on Shaun for doing these ads, but who cares. He’s promoting skateboarding, snowboarding and action sports to an audience that doesn’t like the bloody knuckles and ‘skate-and-destroy’ ethos put out by the core skateboarders. He’s getting more kids to skate, buy skateboards, use skateparks and (most importantly) buy skate shoes.

Shaun was a blast to work with and was cool to everybody on the set. He skated the ramps hard — pulling airs way bigger than we anticipated.

Spohn Ranch has worked with pro athletes for over 20 years creating new ways for skaters to launch themselves into the atmosphere. (Including Danny Way’s jump over the Great Wall of China).

Shaun White Custom Mini-Ramp by Spohn Ranch Skateparks

Next time you talk to a skatepark builder, ask them when the last time an Olympic and X-Game gold medalist skated their creations.

This is what sets Spohn Ranch apart from other builders — real world experience. Our designs are constantly tested by the top pros in the world.

Whether concrete, steel or wood, Spohn Ranch is the #1 custom builder in skateparks.

Spohn Ranch was called in to build a custom mini-ramp for Shaun White, gold medalist in both the Olympics and the X-Games. Even though the ramp was for an HP ad, it still had to be safe and skateable, even with Shaun pulling big moves.
