Daytona Beach Skatepark Grand Opening

Daytona Beach’s premiere action sports facility is officially open!

The Bethune Point Skatepark in Daytona Beach, Florida was officially opened on Saturday November 7th – drawing in hundreds of skaters, families, and curious spectators. The skatepark, called the “finest skatepark in the country” by Recreation Director Percy Williamson, is now open daily for skaters and BMXers to enjoy.

The day’s festivities included speeches by Mayor Glenn Ritchey and City Commissioner Richard Shriver, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, demonstrations from local skaters, and separate BMX and skateboarding contests. Big shout-out to Maui Nix Surf/Skate Shop who ran the contests and donated all of the product for the winners.  Locals Only Surf Magazine also covered the event in their November Issue which can be viewed online here.

Thanks again to everyone who came out to support skateboarding and quality skateparks!

Daytona Beach Skatepark Grand Opening

The new Bethune Point skatepark in Daytona Beach, Florida is all finished and set for the official grand opening this Saturday, November 7th at 10 a.m. With the finishing touches on the landscaping completed, this park is going to look amazing! More importantly though, this park is sure to quickly become one of Florida’s premiere action sports facilities – drawing in a wide range of skaters from across the country.

If the secret late-night sessions we’ve been hearing about are any indication, the grand opening is set to be a great day for skating!  See you there!

Skateboarding Contest at David L. Dirkse Skatepark

The David L. Dirkse Skatepark in Holland, Michigan recently hosted its first skateboarding competition on Saturday August 29th. Despite the stormy weather, a large crowd of skaters, family members and curious community members packed the new skatepark, which was designed and built by Spohn Ranch Skateparks earlier this year.

About 40 skaters competed in three divisions that ranged from beginner to advanced. Another 100 skateboarders watched or skated but didn’t compete. The event was organized and ran by Jeff Copmanger, father of the skater in the photo above and a huge catalyst for getting the skatepark built in Holland.  Good work guys, keep it up!

Flip Skateboards at LA Skate Plaza

In preparation for the release of their highly anticipated new video Extremely Sorry, the Flip Skateboards team has been touring skateparks across the country.  Thrasher Magazine just posted a video clip of the Flip team, including Geoff Rowley, Mark Appleyard, David Gonzales, and Louie Lopez, shredding at Spohn Ranch’s Ambassador Skate Plaza in Wilmington, California.  Check it out here (it’s the second skatepark in the clip)

Fort Irwin Skatepark Grand Opening

Click the photo above to see shots of the festivities from the Grand Opening of the new concrete skatepark at the Fort Irwin Military Base in Southern California.

The turnout for the event was unbelievable, with a crowd of over 300 skaters, parents, soldiers, and community members.  Fort Irwin/National Training Center Commanding General Brig. Gen. Robert “Abe” Abrams, son of the legendary General Creighton Abrams, was on hand to give an inspirational speech to the skaters about respecting the park and their fellow skaters.

“There are not enough words to adequately say thank you to each and every one of you for your support of our Fort Irwin Community. People on post can only say wonderful things about the design, the project and the incredible skaters who showed up for the event. Each of you made a huge difference in the lives of our Soldiers and their families yesterday. The skatepark is having a huge impact on our children and soldiers who need a place for recreation.” said Jackie Hoggins, Marketing Chief at Fort Irwin.

Read below for the story of how this skatepark project came to fruition.

New Skatepark at Military Base Boosts Soliders’ Morale

Permission to shred sir? Permission granted soldier! With the help of Spohn Ranch Skateparks, the new 15,000 square foot concrete skatepark at the Fort Irwin Military Base in Southern California is being hailed as a tremendous success.

Fort Irwin, located just outside of Barstow in the remote Southern California desert, is the premiere National Training Center for all branches of the US Military. All military personnel being deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan must first complete Desert Warfare training at Fort Irwin, which amounts to a large population of soldiers and family members on base looking for ways to occupy their spare time. After the idea of a new skatepark kept popping up at the family advocacy meetings, the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Department at Fort Irwin partnered with Spohn Ranch Skateparks, based in Industry, California, to build a skatepark that they could be really proud of.

The “Grind & Shred Skatepark”, as it was named by the skaters on base, replaced a much smaller existing skatepark that consisted of a few inadequate steel ramps. “Working with an experienced skatepark company like Spohn Ranch was very crucial,” said Jackie Hoggins, Marketing Chief at Fort Irwin. “They know the newest trends and how to design a skatepark that skaters young and old will love.” Spohn Ranch has worked with the US Military on skatepark projects across the globe, having completed skateparks at military installations in New Mexico, Japan, and most recently at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba.

The skatepark is already being met with tremendous praise because of the benefits it will provide for different groups on base. “For the 12-18 year old age group, which is very difficult to keep entertained, the skatepark will provide the perfect venue for exercising and having fun,” said Maarten Voogd of Water Ventures, the contract holder of the project. With a parental figure absent and traditional sports becoming less popular, activities like skateboarding are a great way to keep kids’ minds focused on something positive. Failing to provide this vulnerable age group with facilities for the activities they enjoy leads to them finding less productive ways to spend their time.

For single soldiers on base who often feel left out of activity planning, the skatepark will also provide a new venue for social interaction and relaxation. Most important of all is the way in which the skatepark will become a critical piece of the family support structure. Soldiers can be much more focused on their work knowing their family is safe and occupying their time with positive activities. “Although it may seem obscure to some, we are proud to do our part in supporting the troops that are fighting for our freedom around the world,” said Aaron Spohn, founder and president of Spohn Ranch Skateparks.

The skatepark’s grand opening is set for Wednesday August 26, and will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony, professional demos and a best trick contest.

Skatepark Construction at Fort Irwin Military base

The Spohn Ranch construction crew has been working hard under the scorching desert sun to replace a small setup of steel ramps with a 15,000 square foot concrete skatepark. More info on this project and the grand opening will be coming soon.

New Concrete Skatepark in Liberty Lake, Washington

Click the photo above to see shots of the recently completed 7,000 square foot concrete skatepark in Liberty Lake, Washington. There’s some great shots of the park that were taken super early in the morning when there were no skaters present, as well as some great action shots from a seperate shoot during the day.

Even with a limited budget and a small site, we were still able to create an amazing park that has everything you need. Rather than cramming the slab full of obstacles, we opted to leave lots of open space for pushing and flat ground. If you’re ever in the Liberty Lake area, this is one park you should definitely check out.

Westwind Lakes Skatepark in Miami

Came across a video from some local skaters at the new Westwind Lakes Skatepark in Miami.  Clocking in at just under 9 minutes, this hefty clip is full of buttery lines and smooth skating at the new outdoor park designed and built by Spohn Ranch Skateparks.

Two New Concrete Skateparks in Miami

Click the photo above to see shots of the two new concrete skateparks that we recently completed in the Miami area.

The first one is a 15,000 sq ft concrete skatepark at the Westwind Lakes Park in Miami Dade.  Flowing lines, an abundance of ledges and unique obstacles, and plenty of open space make this a truly enjoyable park.

The second one is 7,200 sq ft concrete skatepark in South Dade.  Although smaller in size, this park is really fun to ride.  One of the coolest features of this park is the wallride that bridges the gap between two big banks.

Both parks were installed using existing concrete slabs, saving both time and money.

Brownsville Skatepark Grand Opening

Late last year Brownsville, TX had a grand opening for the new Spohn Ranch concrete skatepark there.

The park has some nice features – complex bowl with spine, pool coping, granite manual pads, granite benches, granite ledges, brick banks, etc…

Check out this video from the grand opening:

Brownsville Skatepark Grand Opening – December 19th

A new concrete skatepark built by Spohn Ranch. Grand opening is December 19th. Designed with Pillar Design Studio, the park features a complex bowl with a tear-drop spine and pool coping. A street plaza surrounds the bowl with multi-levels, stairs, granite benches and wide banks.

The park was built on a site with expansive soil and water-table inches below the surface. This meant that the entire park had to be built above grade.

By placing pre-cast concrete pieces on concrete footings, Spohn Ranch was able to build up without major site work. The skate elements act as retaining walls, allowing for inexpensive berming.

During construction, the site was directly hit by Hurricane Dolly. With other methods of construction, this may have wiped out an in-progress construction site. Fortunately, it was a minor set-back to this project and resulted in no change orders and no added cost to Brownsville.

Ambassador Skate Plaza Session Photos

Top street skaters have been making trips to the new skate plaza in Wilmington.

Happy to finally have a street plaza in Los Angeles, they’re interested to see how P-Rod’s design turned out.

Their feedback has been very positive. Typically, they’re just blown away that someone has built a skatepark that packs all the street obstacles they want into one space.

The Department of Water & Power benches have been a huge hit, with many skaters amazed at the exact copies of LA’s most famous skatespot.

While still small, the park’s large central plaza leads to rails, banks, stairs, hubba ledges, straight ledges and a 4′ drop.

On the perimeter of the park are the famed DWP benches, a three-step grind box with curved back, a brick-textured bank, a skateable art bench and two raked manual pads with a gap transfer.

We can’t give names of the skaters who have been out until Havoc TV launches the ‘Ambassador Series’. In the meantime, just enjoy these pictures.

Skate Plazas Save Lives!

Paul Rodriguez and Aaron Spohn, originally uploaded by busaboys.

Here are 3 of the people behind the newest positive community space in Los Angeles – Mark Mariscal, Paul “P-Rod” Rodriguez, Jr. and Aaron Spohn.

Mark Mariscal – a senior official with the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.

Paul “P-Rod” Rodriguez, Jr. – one of the top street skaters in the world, winner of the X-Games, Maloof Cup and many other world-class competitions. Part of the elite Nike SB team. Sometimes referred to as the ‘Tiger Woods’ of skateboarding.

Aaron Spohn – an action sports pioneer, Aaron has been building skateparks across the world for 20 years. His company built the park, donating materials and labor.

When local government, celebrities and local business come together, the results can literally change lives. The new Ambassador Skate Plaza will create a positive community space for the youth of historically troubled Wilmington.

“Every skatepark is special, because every skater is special,” says Aaron Spohn, “but sometimes a project really touches you. That’s why we wanted to make this park a memorable destination.”

Making the park memorable are custom touches like granite benches, skateable art and real street obstacles like a brick-textured barcelona wall. Features like this will keep skaters from all over Los Angeles coming back to this park. This will help keep the park a safe oasis for the community.

Here’s a hopeful video about the future of this amazing park:

[WILMINGTON, CA] If I told you the City of Los Angeles didn’t boast a 100% skate plaza, would you believe me? Well up until yesterday, the so-called skate mecca of the world didn’t have one. I know, poor Los Angeles, right? Nevertheless, the grand opening of the brand-spankin’-new Ambassador Skate Plaza in Wilmington yesterday was a monumental occasion. Technically, the park opened six years ago but its design just wasn’t cutting it anymore by today’s standards. As demonstrated by any recent contest and of course, the DC Skate Plaza project, it’s all about mimicking the streets. So Maxwell Billieon of the Ambassador Series worked with councilwoman Janice Hahn and Michael Shull at the LA Department of Recreation and Parks to revamp the park… and the rest, as you’ll soon see, is history. Big ups to co-designer Paul Rodriguez, Daewon Song, Spohn Ranch Skateparks and the City of LA for creating an amazing (and free!) concrete and granite wonderland. Plus, no pads!!!

Grand Opening of P-Rod Skate Plaza co-designed & built by Spohn Ranch Skateparks

Co-Designed by Paul “P-Rod” Rodriguez, Jr. and Spohn Ranch Skateparks. This is from Day 2 of construction. The pieces are lifted from a truck to the site.

Typically, the pieces are placed on concrete footers. When the pieces are completely fitted, concrete flatwork is poured around the pieces, seamlessly joining the slab to the SpohnCrete elements such as quarter-pipes, banks, fun-boxes and every other feature found in a poured-in-place concrete or fabricated skatepark. At Wilmington, the city already had a slab, previously home to a fabricated ramp park.

Due to SpohnCrete’s ease of install, minor customization of the slab results in a totally smooth concrete skatepark with seamless transitions from the slab to transitions and banks.

The video below shows a ledge piece craned from the truck to the site. It demonstrates the speed with which SpohnCrete can create a custom-designed (in this case, co-designed with P-Rod, one of the top street skaters in the world, and several of his fellow pro skaters.

The Grand Opening is September 27th and will be amazing. P-Rod and 2007 Skater of the Year Daewon Song will skate demos with participation by various awesome brands and people from politics, business, sports, etc… For more information about the Grand Opening, go to http://www.theambassadorseries.com

Here’s quick video of the installation:

Richard Walton Concrete Skatepark – Spohn Ranch

The SpohnCrete skatepark in Oakdale, MN has become an important community space for local skaters. They gather to skate, talk and (most importantly) make videos.

We’ve seen some very nice videos from other SpohnCrete parks in Lemont and 29 Palms, but the Oakdale skaters are coming on strong:

Some nice photography by Collin Martin at Spohn Ranch’s Centennial Skatepark in Lemont, IL. This was a 2006 SpohnCrete skate plaza that has become an area favorite. SpohnCrete’s ability to act as a retaining wall let Lemont build a multi-tiered street plaza without extensive site work, especially important due to high-water tables. The city’s time table was tight, but even with excessive rains, Spohn Ranch installed the park on time and on budget.
