final skatepark design for dalton, georgia

Here’s the final design for Dalton, Georgia’s new concrete skatepark. At roughly 5,600 square feet, this small plaza-style park will be a valuable addition to Dalton’s diverse collection of recreational facilities.  With a design/construction budget of only $90,000, Spohn Ranch worked with the local skateboard community to develop a design that would accommodate a wide variety of skating styles and skill levels.

Construction starts next week!

Skatepark Design in Dalton, Georgia

This past month Spohn Ranch was chosen as the design/build contractor for Dalton, Georgia’s new concrete skatepark.  With successfully building an action sports facility in Dalton, Spohn Ranch will continue the line of work we began in 1992 – building world-class skateparks for both community users and professional skaters.  In the past five years alone, we have built over 300 skateparks – from micro-skate spots to national destinations like our recent Daytona Beach project.

There’s a great article from the Daily Citizen describing Spohn Ranch’s design process and first public meeting with the local skate community.  Stay tuned for updates as the design takes shape!

48 of our best concrete skatepark designs

We’ve been getting together our best designs (for a variety of budget levels and site conditions) to help skatepark committees in their planning process.

These parks run the gamut from street plazas, to bowls, to skateable art.

Grand Opening of P-Rod Skate Plaza co-designed & built by Spohn Ranch Skateparks

Co-Designed by Paul “P-Rod” Rodriguez, Jr. and Spohn Ranch Skateparks. This is from Day 2 of construction. The pieces are lifted from a truck to the site.

Typically, the pieces are placed on concrete footers. When the pieces are completely fitted, concrete flatwork is poured around the pieces, seamlessly joining the slab to the SpohnCrete elements such as quarter-pipes, banks, fun-boxes and every other feature found in a poured-in-place concrete or fabricated skatepark. At Wilmington, the city already had a slab, previously home to a fabricated ramp park.

Due to SpohnCrete’s ease of install, minor customization of the slab results in a totally smooth concrete skatepark with seamless transitions from the slab to transitions and banks.

The video below shows a ledge piece craned from the truck to the site. It demonstrates the speed with which SpohnCrete can create a custom-designed (in this case, co-designed with P-Rod, one of the top street skaters in the world, and several of his fellow pro skaters.

The Grand Opening is September 27th and will be amazing. P-Rod and 2007 Skater of the Year Daewon Song will skate demos with participation by various awesome brands and people from politics, business, sports, etc… For more information about the Grand Opening, go to http://www.theambassadorseries.com

New renderings of SpohnCrete parks

We had high-end 3D renderings created for several of our SpohnCrete skateparks. Most of these parks are already built or under construction. While these parks only begin to tap the potential of the SpohnCrete system, they’re a good starting point when creating a custom skatepark.

Advanced features like waterfalls, over-vert, granite ledges and more make SpohnCrete the best solution for creating custom skateparks with reliable installation and superior performance.

Skateable Art – Construction Update

Installation has begun at one of the biggest skateable art installations in the US. Pieces like this “Bent Penny” are being craned into place under the direction of Spohn Ranch COO, Mark Bradford.

We’ll post photos are soon as they’re available.

In the meantime, enjoy this brief slideshow with info about all of our product lines:

Metal skate deterrents are not the answer

This is a park near my house in Southern California. The city accidentally built skateable art, then put ugly metal skate deterrents on top. This isolates skaters from the community and uses city money to discourage physical activity. For the same cost, the city could have built the pieces with stainless steel edging which would stand up to grinding & board slides. This would create a positive community space where skaters are accepted as valid community members who deserve adequate space and funding to practice their sport.

Skateable Art by Spohn Ranch Skateparks

Our semi-secret skateable art project is moving forward quickly. The final pre-cast concrete pieces look amazing. We’ll have the pieces in the ground and skateable before summer, so look for it in a park near you! We’re not sure if the city is deeming it a “skate park”, so the location is still under wraps.

From initial vision to finished project, we’ve been excited by this project. The pieces are unique and totally skateable. Pictured are the ‘Whale’, ‘Skate Hoop’ & ‘Whales Tail’. By working closely with artists & landscape architects, we’re helping create one of the biggest skateable art installations in the US.

The pieces will be set at intervals along a pedestrian path, creating interesting sculptures & skatable spots for local youth.

By incorporating skaters into the community (instead of in a hidden, fenced park) this project will transform the park into a positive space with physical fitness opportunities for youth alienated from traditional team sports.

Check back for photos after the pieces are installed.
