Skateboarding in Native America

With two Native American-related projects starting up this month, the Spohn Ranch family has had great reason to celebrate the rich culture and history of Native Americans.

In early May we broke ground on a concrete skatepark at the Utero Indian tribal headquarters in Fort Duchesne, Utah. Brought to fruition with a large donation from a local resident, this 6,000 square foot skatepark will become a true community showpiece for this small community of 650 residents. With few recreational opportunities on base, a space where youth can be constructive with their energy is clearly vital.

For years an abandoned concrete slab had become the defacto skatepark as local youth incrementally amassed a collection of homemade jumps, boxes and rails. Seeing the passion and dedication of these local youth first hand, community leaders knew a professionally-designed and constructed skatepark would become a huge asset for the tribal headquarters.

After clearing the slab of debris, we were able to use it as a giant foundation for new concrete elements that would be built from the ground up.

As one Spohn Ranch crew was charging ahead In Utah, another was working hard on a unique project at the renowned Museum of Man in San Diego, California.  “Ramp it Up: Skateboard Culture in Native America” is an amazing art exhibition and clearly wouldn’t be complete without some live skating action.  That’s where Spohn Ranch came into the picture.  The task at hand – building a half-pipe inside the famed museum walls.

Not your typical setting for a half-pipe, the project involved some pretty intense planning and logistical coordination.

The exhibit is currently up and running!  For more background information on the project check out the Musuem of Man’s website here.

Spohn Ranch Welcomes Charlie Wilkins to the Family

We are proud to announce that we are welcoming retired professional skateboarder Charlie Wilkins into the Spohn Ranch family as our new full-time CAD designer. We met Charlie this past summer as we were working with Alli Sports on the Dew Tour and immediately knew he would be a great fit.

While many know him from his Judas Priest-inspired onslaught in Maple’s “Black Cat”, Charlie’s involvement in skateboarding goes way beyond magazine spreads and video parts. Since turning pro in 1996, Charlie has spent several years as a World Cup Skateboarding judge, course designer and builder for the Dew Tour and instructor at countless skateboarding camps. With 20+ years of skateboarding under his belt, we are extremely excited to see his passion, creativity and well-rounded experience influence our work!

Check out Charlie in action at our in-process project – McBride Skatepark in Long Beach, California!

Skateparks of 2011: Year in Review

As 2011 winds to a close, we wanted to share a few of our favorite municipal projects from the past year. While the special event work we do is insanely fun, there is literally no better feeling than watching a community and a brotherhood form around a permanent structure that you created.

Many of our projects that came to fruition in 2011 were hard-fought journeys, several years in the making. After years of skaters being ticketed, kicked out and constantly told “NO”, we feel truly honored in helping communities across the US stand up and finally say “Yes!” to skateboarding.

We want to give a big thank you to all of our friends, family and partners who helped make 2011 such a special year. Looking forward to continuing the ride in 2012!

North Laurel Community Skatepark – North Laurel, Maryland

Watching footage of kids flowing through this park is what makes all of our hard work so worthwhile. 12,000 square feet of skateable terrain, a host of skateable boulders and flow for days!

Phillips Park Skate and BMX Park – Aurora, Illinois

Dubbed the “gnarliest” skatepark in the suburbs of Chicago, this park combines 8,000 square feet of plaza terrain, 4,000 square feet of BMX transition and flowing spectator berms to create a truly unique action sports space.

Prairie Side Skate Plaza – Oregon, Illinois

Only 6,500 square feet, but this park’s innovative layout, architectural aesthetic and vibrant landscaping make it one of the most modern skateboarding spaces in the state of Illinois.

Marina Park Skatepark – Titusville, Florida

It’s hard to find a better setting for a skatepark than the coast of Florida. The waterfront views, colored concrete and open air feeling all come together to create a vibrant public space – arguably the most intriguing and visually-striking part of a new recreational complex.

McBride Skatepark – Long Beach, California

95% complete, this highly-anticipated park will officially open in early 2012. A 10+ year client, the City of Long Beach understood the positive impact of skateparks very early on and has been supporting skateboarding ever since with quality skateparks like this.

Hansen Dam Skatepark – Los Angeles, California

Another 10+ year client and 95%-er, this park is awaiting some final landscaping before it will open in 2012. 8,800 square feet of terrain, a unique flow bowl and a strong use of street-inspired granite and brick!

Fergusson Park Skatepark – Rialto, California

Made possible by the persistence of a local family with multiple generations of skateboarders, this 16,000 square foot park has been finished for a few months now, but is awaiting the completion of other park improvements before it will be officially shreddable.

Red Mountain Adventure Park – Woodland Park , Colorado

In a state known for its outdoor recreation, we couldn’t just build any old skatepark, we had to bring something special to the table. The end result – 24,000 square feet of concrete bowls, plazas and skillfully shaped BMX dirt jumps!

Thompson Park Skatepark – The Dalles, Oregon

In 2011 we wrapped up the 7,500 square foot phase 1 with a tight budget, made possible with donated materials and services from the City and local contractors. On a Dew Tour trip to Portland, the park’s co-designer Vince Onel got a first-hand feel for the park.

Floating Skatepark for Red Bull’s Mississippi Grind

Spohn Ranch is proud to finally announce that after six months of hard work, our floating skatepark is ready to launch down the Mississippi River, starting in St. Paul, Minnesota this weekend.  In collaboration with Red Bull and Murphy Productions, Spohn Ranch designed and built an innovative concrete skatepark on a 195-foot-long barge.

This weekend, five Minneapolis skateboarders are leaving their home port on the barge. With their sights set on New Orleans, Louisiana, the group will tear it up along the mighty Mississippi on an epic 1,705 mile, 28-day adventure known as Mississippi Grind. The barge will make port stops in Quad Cities, IA and St. Louis, MO before reaching its final stop in the Big Easy. Each stop will be action-packed with skate demos from world-class Red Bull athletes and local legends, as well as local “Ticket to Grind” qualifying competitions. Two top skaters from each port will win a ticket to vie for a $3,000 cash prize at the final “Ticket to Grind” competition in New Orleans.

Oh and the best part is…at the end of the last stop, the concrete elements are being donated to the City of New Orleans and transformed into a permanent public park!! Check back for the final design on NOLA’s park, as well as updates from the road.

Here’s the website for the event.

Guantanamo Bay, Cuba Precision-Cast Concrete Bowl

We’ve put the finishing touches on our short film detailing the unique opportunity we were presented with back in 2009 – building a concrete bowl at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba.  Click the video above to get an in-depth look at Spohn Ranch’s state-of-the-art construction process that enabled us to build an enclosed concrete bowl in less than five days.

In an effort to upgrade the Base’s recreational facilities, the US Navy’s Moral, Welfare and Recreation Division toyed around the idea of adding a concrete bowl to their existing collection of ramps, rails and boxes.  With time, labor and material constraints posing significant roadblocks, they then went in search of a skatepark builder who could tackle this unique challenge.   As the nation’s only skatepark builder with the ability to precision-cast concrete features in an off-site plant, Spohn Ranch stepped to the plate and swiftly handled this project.

While Spohn Ranch utilizes precision-cast concrete primarily for street features and sculptural elements, this video leaves no doubt that precision-cast concrete is valuable tool for speeding up and simplifying the skatepark construction process.  We know that as winter approaches and grant deadlines near, many communities lose hope that their skatepark projects can be completed on time.  To make sure your skatepark gets built at the fastest pace possible, please get in touch with us today.

Tony Hawk Foundation Chooses Long Beach

This past week, the Tony Hawk Foundation announced that they have chosen Long Beach’s McBride Skatepark as their spotlight project for the year.  The Stand Up for Skateparks event in October will help raise funds for the new 12,000-14,000 square foot concrete skatepark being designed and built by Spohn Ranch.

“We are honored and excited that the Tony Hawk Foundation has chosen McBride Skatepark,” said 6th District Councilmember Dee Andrews. “The additional funding will allow us to provide a world-class skate park for the community. Helping us give kids an alternative to the streets is what the project is all about. With the Tony Hawk Foundation in the mix we have the opportunity to create even more energy, excitement and pride from the kids and the community involved in the skatepark.”

“Long Beach has a strong history in supporting youth who choose skateboarding and BMX as their sports of choice,” said Tony Hawk Foundation Executive Director Miki Vuckovich. ” Over a decade ago the city’s leaders took the initiative to provide these safe havens for kids to go, ride, and remain engaged in something positive and healthy. Tony and our Board of Directors are proud to have the opportunity to share Long Beach’s story and show our support in this way.”

Since 2003, Spohn Ranch has been proud to assist the City of Long Beach with their skatepark planning efforts.  The Mcbride Skatepark will be Spohn Ranch’s fifth skatepark in Long Beach, continuing the tradition of high-quality skateboarding environments.  In the following weeks, Spohn Ranch will be collaborating with some of Long Beach’s top professional skaters to develop the design for what will surely become one of Southern California’s premiere skateparks.  Stay tuned as the design work pushes ahead!

Aaron Spohn’s Guest Column in Recreation Management

For the November issue of Recreation Management Magazine, Spohn Ranch Skateparks’ President and Founder, Aaron Spohn, was selected to write a guest column related to skateparks.  As a pioneering figure in the skatepark industry, Aaron has developed an in-depth understanding of what it takes to make a truly great skatepark come to fruition.

Municipal skateparks have come a long way since the early 1990′s and to make sure skateparks keep heading in the right direction, Aaron shared some words of wisdom in this issue with “10 Ways to Maximize your Skatepark”.  Watch for the article in the print version, or read it here on Recreation Management’s website.

Spohn Ranch Recognized by Inc. Magazine

inc5000

INDUSTRY, CALIFORNIA -  Spohn Ranch Skateparks placed # 2,950 on the Inc. 5000, an annual ranking of the 5,000 fastest-growing private companies in the nation, accounting for a combined revenue of $184.5 billion and 334 percent growth in 2009.  Spohn Ranch, with steady business even in the face of economic downturn, jumped almost 2,000 spots since their 2008 debut at # 4,798 – a strong indicator of the company’s continuing dedication to progress in the skatepark industry.

“Being recognized by Inc. Magazine is a great accomplishment, but getting today’s youth off the couch and into safe, engaging recreational facilities is the true reward, “said Kirsten Bradford, CEO of Spohn Ranch.  “It’s great to see that even in an economic recession, cities are still committing funds to recreational facilities for the kids.”

According to Inc. Magazine, Spohn Ranch is one of the “innovating companies that is creating jobs, redefining their industries, and shaping our world.” By branching out into new skatepark genres such as skate plazas and skateable art, Spohn Ranch keeps things fresh and is taking the industry to new levels. “Skateparks have come a long way since the early ‘90s when dropping a few steel ramps on a tennis court was considered building a skatepark,” said Aaron Spohn, founder and president of Spohn Ranch.  Consequently, Spohn frequently works with landscape architects and sculptural artists to create custom, integrated parks that become a showpiece for their communities.  “Approaching cities with a diverse project team shows them that a skatepark is not just something for skaters, but a vibrant public space that can be appreciated by anyone.”

By helping to educate cities on the wide-ranging benefits of a skatepark, Spohn Ranch has attracted more funding towards the skatepark industry, with the end result being more world-class facilities for skaters to enjoy.

Skateboarding action in Cuba

Guantanamo Bay Skatepark

Iguana friend, originally uploaded by spohnranchskateparks.

Thanks to Spohn Ranch Skateparks, the skatepark at the U.S. Guantanamo Bay Naval Base just got a whole lot better. Guantanamo Bay, known more for its controversial detention camps than its skateboarding scene, is located in southeastern Cuba and was taken under U.S. control in 1903. As part of the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Program (MWR), the U.S. military hired Spohn Ranch to enhance their current skatepark with the construction of a pre-cast SpohnCrete ™ bowl and a skateable art piece known as a “half-moon” bank. By using Spohn’s state-of-the-art technology, the U.S. military knew they could make their facilities on par with stateside skateparks, and improve their ability to raise the morale of the sailors, their families, and the entire Guantanamo community.

After being chosen for this project in February 2009, the Spohn Ranch team flew from Los Angeles to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where they boarded a small twin-engine airplane and began their journey towards the United States’ oldest overseas Navy Base. Upon arrival at the Naval Base, the team observed their stunning surroundings and waited for the colossal barge containing their pre-cast concrete pieces.

Once the barge pulled into the port, Mark Bradford, construction supervisor, immediately began executing the construction plan. Using a 100-ton crane, they transported the sections of the concrete bowl off the barge and onto a concrete slab near the existing skatepark. Then Bradford worked with a local crew made up of Jamaicans and Filipinos to set the pieces in place, pour concrete into the floor of the bowl, perform grout work, and create a top deck. Throughout this process, the local kids watched and waited with gleeful anticipation for the moment they could drop in and begin carving around the smooth corners of the bowl. In addition to the Spohncrete ™ bowl, Bradford and the local construction workers also transported the pre-cast concrete half-moon bank off the barge and seamlessly integrated it into the existing skatepark.

Spohn Ranch’s commitment to the soldiers’ back-smith grinds and promotion of skateboarding around the world rang true when they accepted this unique opportunity. When it was all said and done, the Spohn team left Guantanamo Bay having made significant and unique upgrades to the skatepark in less than a week. These improvements also came just in time for a demo at the park that featured the talents of professional skateboarder Mimi Knoop, which was sure to boost the morale of the Guantanamo community. For further information on this project, stay tuned to Fuel TV for complete video coverage documenting the production process.

Spohn Ranch Skateparks: Design. Build. Come together.

NEW WEBSITE UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Spohn Ranch began as a community, anchored by Aaron’s backyard half-pipe, and grew into a renowned nationwide skatepark design/build firm. The creative culture of Aaron’s backyard gave birth to many companies, careers and artistic creations, including Spohn Ranch’s original “S” logo and red, white and blue color scheme. It’s treated us well over the past twenty years - becoming an iconic symbol of skatepark innovation and ingenuity.

We are always evolving though, and after 20 years of successful business, we felt it was finally time that the graphic look and feel of our brand evolve as well. Over the past several months, our team has been working hard to find new ways to express our company spirit and values, culminating in a new and improved Spohn Ranch brand.

We’re eager to unveil our new look, but one of the most involved parts of the rebranding effort – the website – is still a few months from completion. In the meantime, we hope you’ll stay connected as we embark on an exciting journey in 2013.

It will be a big year for us as we continue to push the limits of skatepark design and construction with sculptural masterpieces across the globe. The first phases of our biggest project ever, over 400,000 square feet of design/build will also be coming to fruition in the mountains of West Virginia this year.

What we’re most excited about though, is that our skateparks will continue to help us achieve our grander vision - tearing down walls, forging communities and bringing people together.
