Skateboarding in Native America

With two Native American-related projects starting up this month, the Spohn Ranch family has had great reason to celebrate the rich culture and history of Native Americans.

In early May we broke ground on a concrete skatepark at the Utero Indian tribal headquarters in Fort Duchesne, Utah. Brought to fruition with a large donation from a local resident, this 6,000 square foot skatepark will become a true community showpiece for this small community of 650 residents. With few recreational opportunities on base, a space where youth can be constructive with their energy is clearly vital.

For years an abandoned concrete slab had become the defacto skatepark as local youth incrementally amassed a collection of homemade jumps, boxes and rails. Seeing the passion and dedication of these local youth first hand, community leaders knew a professionally-designed and constructed skatepark would become a huge asset for the tribal headquarters.

After clearing the slab of debris, we were able to use it as a giant foundation for new concrete elements that would be built from the ground up.

As one Spohn Ranch crew was charging ahead In Utah, another was working hard on a unique project at the renowned Museum of Man in San Diego, California.  “Ramp it Up: Skateboard Culture in Native America” is an amazing art exhibition and clearly wouldn’t be complete without some live skating action.  That’s where Spohn Ranch came into the picture.  The task at hand – building a half-pipe inside the famed museum walls.

Not your typical setting for a half-pipe, the project involved some pretty intense planning and logistical coordination.

The exhibit is currently up and running!  For more background information on the project check out the Musuem of Man’s website here.

Skatepark Grand Opening in Gardena, California

A couple of weeks back, we celebrated the grand opening of our recently completed skatepark project at Rowley Park in Gardena, California. Helping cut the ribbon was an incredibly rewarding experience as this project had been several years in the making, with a number of hurdles along the way.

Even more rewarding than the ribbon cutting however, was being able to take a step back and see what was once an empty patch of dirt now being thoroughly enjoyed by hundreds of skateboarders – all of different ages, races and social backgrounds. We received a lot of praise that day, but the sentiment we heard echoed over and over again was how beautiful the park looked and what an inviting space it was for not just skateboarders, but the entire community.

We want to say thank you to everyone who helped make this project possible. And if this wasn’t good news enough, we are currently building Gardena’s second skatepark at Johnson Park, with a grand opening tentatively scheduled for early June.

Our client, Kelly Fujio of Gardena Parks and Recreation, with President/Founder Aaron Spohn.

McBride Skatepark Grand Opening in the LBC

Spohn Ranch’s fifth skatepark for the City of Long Beach celebrated its official grand opening this past weekend. It was an amazing day for Long Beach skateboarding and was summed up incredibly well by the Tony Hawk Foundation here.

“Tony Hawk and a group of pro athletes joined about 300 city officials and local youth on Saturday for the grand opening of the Ernest McBride Skatepark in Long Beach, California. The Poly High neighborhood, where the skatepark is located, is home to one of the country’s most diverse urban communities, yet few recreational opportunities are available for its youth. The new 10,000-square-foot skate plaza is considered by local leaders as the area’s best chance to keep kids active, healthy, and safe from gangs and crime.

Spearheaded by former Long Beach City Council Member Mike Donelon and the nonprofit Action Sports Kids (ASK Long Beach) organization, the McBride Skatepark was a collaboration between the city, its citizens, and local advocacy groups. “The City Of Long Beach understands the benefits of skateparks, and is a huge supporter of the kids who ride them,” says Donelon. “Today was the climax of our skatepark program. With the help of the Tony Hawk Foundation, we built a world-class skatepark that is going to keep kids out of gangs and off drugs, and will help them stay active and get along.”

Tony Hawk presented the McBride Skatepark at THF’s Stand Up For Skateparks event in Beverly Hills in 2010, where he helped raise $45,000 for the project. Long Beach has been a leader in providing its at-risk youth with safe, quality public skateparks, and the McBride Skatepark is the latest addition to its ongoing skatepark program.

“It’s an excellent street-plaza design, with just enough transitions to make it well-rounded,” says Hawk. “It has something for all skill levels, and is exactly the type of project, area, and advocacy that we want to get involved with. It should be an example for other communities to follow.”

After a few brief speeches, Hawk and fellow celebrity skaters Geoff Rowley, Ron Chatman, Riley Hawk, Danny Gonzalez, Daewon Song, Chad Tim Tim, Clive Dixon, and Danny Montoya, plus BMXers Aaron Ross, Dakota Roche, and Gabe Brooks ripped through the park, demonstrating its potential before being joined by the hundreds of local youth who were keen to have their turn. “It was a blast,” says Hawk. “The kids were so eager to skate that we cut our demo short to let them in.”

Of the nearly 500 skateparks the Tony Hawk Foundation has helped to fund, the Ernest McBride Skatepark is the 417th to open. It’s a free, open-access facility that welcomes all wheeled youth—skateboarders, BMXers,

Throughout the development of the skatepark—from planning to fundraising to design—local youth were engaged and integral to the process. Now that their efforts have resulted in Long Beach’s latest public amenity, they can take pride in knowing that they helped create it. As both the City Of Long Beach and the Tony Hawk Foundation have understood for more than a decade, involving the youth in the process of developing the skatepark, and allowing them to invest their time and effort in the project, is the best way to ensure the park’s long-term success.

And the kids who were previously chased by police for riding their skateboards on city streets learned a thing or two about how local government can work for them; the skatepark stands as a concrete reminder of what they’ve accomplished through collaboration, cooperation, and compromise.”

Orizaba Park Skate Spot – Official Grand Opening!

Our latest skatepark design/build project for the City of Long Beach, California is officially open as of this past Saturday’s ribbon cutting ceremony. Although the skateboarding area at Orizaba Park is quite small at only 3,600 square feet (45’ x 80’) it was definitely the highlight of the park’s revitalization. During the grand opening, it was also the most popular space in the park – a clear sign that investing in skateparks and skate spots is a valuable use of public funding. While a handful of kids messed around on the new basketball court, over 50 kids swarmed the skate spot with amazing passion and determination.

Our fifth skatepark for the City of Long Beach, this 3,500 square foot park will be a welcome addition to Long Beach’s diverse and growing skatepark master plan. With a small site and budget, this unique space will provide the local community’s up-and-coming skaters with a great space to progress before moving on to the City’s larger and more complex parks.

We wish they wouldn’t have fenced it, but super fun nonetheless. Big shout out to all of the behind-the-scenes players who helped make this happen!

Dew Tour 2011 – Las Vegas, Nevada “Skate Street”

Final design for the 2011 Dew Tour Skate Street Finals in Las Vegas, Nevada. Located inside the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino’s “The Joint”, this unique venue will host the “best of the best” from this year’s professional skateboarders. The venue’s existing stage created our main elevation and will also showcase the talents of rap artist 50 Cent immediately following the finals.

Stay tuned for photos of the course build and updates from the qualifying rounds of action!

Red Bull Mississippi Grind Finals in New Orleans

The floating concrete skatepark we designed and built for Red Bull made its way down to New Orleans, Louisiana this past weekend for the final event of the Red Bull Mississippi Grind. Hosting contests at stops along the Mississippi River route, the NOLA event featured the top eight skaters from the previous stops in St. Paul, Minnesota, Davenport, Iowa and St. Louis, Missouri.

A beautiful City, a passionate crowd and some amazing skateboarding talent made this an incredible event. To make a great story even greater, the first Mississippi Grind event series is concluding with the donation of the concrete elements to the City of New Orleans for their first public skatepark. With corporate sponsors like Red Bull giving back like this, the future of skateboarding looks very bright!  Photos from the whole journey can be found here.

Barge Skatepark Floats On!

The Red Bull Mississippi Grind is in full swing as the Spohn Ranch concrete skatepark makes it way down the Mississippi River over the next few weeks. The event kicked off in St. Paul, Minnesota as twenty of the state’s top skateboarders competed for the “Ticket to Ride” that would propel them to the final competition in New Orleans. A host of Red Bull and Converse-sponsored professional skateboarders, including Kenny Anderson, Joey Brezinski and Luis Tolentino, have also been enjoying life on the barge and performing demos at the different stops.

This past weekend was particularly exciting as the barge rolled into Davenport, Iowa for the second major stop of the tour. Davenport local and close friend of the Spohn Ranch family, Ben Otting, qualified first in the contest and is now packing his bags for New Orleans!

As this innovative Red Bull/Spohn Ranch collaboration continues to make its way down the Mississippi River, it will make a stop in St. Louis, Missouri for another big local event before heading to New Orleans for the grand finale. And to top off this amazing story, the concrete elements will be donated by Spohn Ranch to the City of New Orleans and incorporated into a new public skatepark. Stay tuned for more updates from the Mississippi!

Dew Tour 2011 – Salt Lake City, Utah “Skate Street”

Dew Tour 2011 – Salt Lake City, Utah “Skate Street”, originally uploaded by spohnranchskateparks.

Spohn Ranch, a cornerstone of action sports progression, came through big for the Dew Tour’s third stop in Salt Lake City, Utah this past weekend with the design and construction of the “Skateboard Street” course. Hot off the success of the Ocean City, Maryland and Portland, Oregon stops, the Toyota Challenge in SLC featured BMX dirt/vert, freestyle moto, and skate vert/street competitions. The famed “Portable Concrete Bowl” is currently in storage until the next season, with rumors hinting that it will be featured at every stop.

For SLC, our 11,000 square foot concrete skatepark replicated an urban plaza environment with recreations of popular features today’s top street skaters are riding. With a huge overlap into our overall design process, having our skateparks and event courses scrutinized by the world’s top professional skaters on a daily basis, provides us with invaluable feedback that is incorporated into our municipal projects for an unmatched level of quality.  Finals highlights can be seen here!

Via Alli Sports:

“In what the riders were calling out as one of the best courses the Dew Tour has ever built, the guys were throwing trick after trick as proof. Once the final jam was underway, it was Decenzo who got his rhythm going with a nollie heel down the gap, and solid tech tricks while making full use of the course. His intro run, earlier jam and final jam score of 87.18 gave him the win and it also earned him the overall lead for the Dew Cup. When the competition ended, he credited the course with helping him take the win.

“The way they put the whole big section together was good, the hubbas were the right height and the rails were the right height, steepness and length,” Decenzo said. “It was great for progressing and landing tricks consistently.”

Stay tuned for the final design for the Dew Tour finals in Las Vegas!

Floating Skatepark for Red Bull’s Mississippi Grind

Spohn Ranch is proud to finally announce that after six months of hard work, our floating skatepark is ready to launch down the Mississippi River, starting in St. Paul, Minnesota this weekend.  In collaboration with Red Bull and Murphy Productions, Spohn Ranch designed and built an innovative concrete skatepark on a 195-foot-long barge.

This weekend, five Minneapolis skateboarders are leaving their home port on the barge. With their sights set on New Orleans, Louisiana, the group will tear it up along the mighty Mississippi on an epic 1,705 mile, 28-day adventure known as Mississippi Grind. The barge will make port stops in Quad Cities, IA and St. Louis, MO before reaching its final stop in the Big Easy. Each stop will be action-packed with skate demos from world-class Red Bull athletes and local legends, as well as local “Ticket to Grind” qualifying competitions. Two top skaters from each port will win a ticket to vie for a $3,000 cash prize at the final “Ticket to Grind” competition in New Orleans.

Oh and the best part is…at the end of the last stop, the concrete elements are being donated to the City of New Orleans and transformed into a permanent public park!! Check back for the final design on NOLA’s park, as well as updates from the road.

Here’s the website for the event.

Woodland Park’s Official Grand Opening Celebration

The highly anticipated Red Mountain Adventure Park officially opened last week, as hundreds of Colorado skateboarders and BMX riders enjoyed their first runs on the fresh concrete and shaped earth. In the works since 2008, the park features a 16,000 square foot freestyle BMX track and 8,000 square foot state-of-the-art concrete skatepark.

Spohn Ranch’s Jason Baldessari, who was instrumental in helping the City of Woodland Park obtain a grant for the project, was on hand to celebrate the park’s opening – testing out the skatepark for himself and getting great feedback from the local riders. Our next Colorado skatepark project comes to Alamosa, Colorado and is currently in the design phase, with construction slated for early October.

Dew’s Portland, Oregon Street Course Revealed

As the Dew Tour rolled into Portland, Oregon with the first “Skate Street” event of the season, our goal was to create a modern, street-inspired course that would continue to complement the Dew Tour’s unique contest format – a combination of a timed run and an organized jam session.

In line with the street plaza movement, concrete is an integral part of this course and allowed the design to transform into a work of urban architecture. The course features the defining elements of a downtown plaza, while maintaining the perfect kind of flow that makes the Dew Tour events so fun to watch. With an innovative circular flow, free from any dead ends, riders are able to easily cruise up and down through the course and really let their style shine as they go from one feature to the next.

Anchoring the center of the course is an extra-wide staircase supported by concrete hubba ledges and a handrail, both inspired by real-world scale found in the streets. Landscaped planters and grass gaps add to the architectural aesthetic of the course, while providing exciting opportunities for big, crowd-pleasing tricks. An array of hips, ledges, manual pads and smaller hubbas and handrails round out the course, creating a near infinite number of lines and combinations.

Spohn Ranch crews arrived in Portland yesterday and are currently working hard on the construction of both the street course and concrete bowl.  Follow us on twitter for the most up-to-date news!

Official Grand Opening of Aurora, Illinois Skatepark

June 21st, 2011 was the 9th annual International Go Skateboarding Day and Spohn Ranch had the privilege of celebrating the special day by skating and hanging out at the official grand opening of our latest design/build project in Aurora, Illinois.  Big thanks to the local skateshop, Yeah Board Shop, who organized a contest and product toss as part of the day’s festivities.  Parents and City officials also got in on the fun with the official ribbon cutting ceremony.

Our innovative design combined a colorful 8,000 square foot skate plaza, landscaped areas and  roughly 4,000 square feet of BMX terrain to create a dynamic action sports space.  The unique features and well-rounded course layout are already drawing great praise from the local skateboarders – with many hailing it the best skatepark in the entire state of Illinois.  Here is a great article from The Beacon News highlighting yesterday’s celebration.

Go Skateboarding Day 2011

Earlier this week, The International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) released the collectable event poster for the 9th annual Go Skateboarding Day, which will be held June 21, 2011.  This year’s poster was designed by Jim Phillips, the iconic skateboard artist and former art director for Santa Cruz Skateboards.

“Go Skateboarding Day works to honor and unite participants in the spirit of skateboarding and since its 2003 inception, has prompted cities to build skate parks, promoted local skate shops and raised money for local charities.”

June 21 will be a great day for skatepark committees and non-profit groups to organize fundraisers and raise awareness for local skatepark efforts.  Backed by an official the holiday, City officials and community members are quickly learning the power of skateboarding and why investing in quality skateparks is so vital to the hearts and minds of our Nation’s youth.  As always, it will also be a great day for skateboarding and BBQs at Spohn Ranch’s hundreds of skateparks across the country.  For help with planning skatepark fundraisers and events, get in touch today!

2011 D-Town Throwdown in Dallas, Texas

Click the photo above to see all the action from third annual 2011 D-Town Throwdown contest at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas.  Organized by our sister company, the Action Park Alliance, and with course design/construction by Spohn Ranch, this year’s event was another huge success.  Check out the great article from Transworld Business covering the event

Through a partnership with the NHL’s Dallas Stars, the skate contest was organized as a pre-game festivity for Star’s March 19th game against the Philadelphia Flyers.  The event not only brings together some of Texas’ top talent, but also exposes a lot of non-skaters and community members to the magic that is street skateboarding – raising awareness and support for more public skateparks in Texas.  We’re already looking forward to next year’s event!

Possum Creek Skatepark Official Grand Opening

The ribbon cutting ceremony and demo by Freeride Surf/Skate Shop makes things official at our 18,000 square foot skatepark in Gainesville, Florida.

This Spohn Ranch design/build project from 2010 has been invaluable showcase of youth passion and creativity for the City of Gainesville since its soft opening in March. In a recent news article, Parks Commissioner Randy Wells described the park as “a tremendous asset to this part of town — the whole city really.” He also added that “the relative danger of skateboarding and other extreme sports is not as perilous as youths sitting at home idle on the couch.” Great remarks from another satisfied Spohn Ranch client!

Ramp Setup at the East Coast Surfing Championships

This past weekend Spohn Ranch Skateparks had the privilege of setting up motocross jumps and our signature 13′ vert ramp for the East Coast Surfing Championships in Virginia Beach.  This three day event was nothing but fun in sun!  Click here for further info on the industry’s leading action sports event division.

Grand Opening of Henderson’s Morrell Skatepark

On Thursday, July 8, Spohn Ranch was proud to assist the City of Henderson, Nevada with the opening of their fifth skatepark. The day’s festivities included a dedication from Councilwoman Gerri Schroder and demonstrations from professional skateboarders and BMX riders.

With a rich history of nationally-recognized recreational facilities, the City of Henderson knew they wanted their fifth skatepark to become one of the nation’s premiere action sports facilities. With over 24,000 square feet of skateable terrain, Henderson’s Morrell Skatepark is a state-of-the art environment combining the best of plaza and transition-style features.

The park was built through a combination of precision-cast concrete and TrueRide HD ramp equipment – transforming a set of dilapidated basketball courts into a well-rounded hybrid skatepark. Prior to Morrell Skatepark, Henderson boasted four public skateparks. While these skateparks were valuable community resources, they were geared towards advanced riders with a preference for big transitions.

With the Morrell Skatepark, we worked diligently with the local community to design a park that would accommodate a broad range of needs. The park features a modern plaza-style layout at one end of the park with stairs, brick-textured banks and concrete benches. The other half of the park is geared towards BMX riders and beginner skaters who are just learning to ride. With a big emphasis on programming during the planning stages, we designed the park with a variety of features that were well-suited for lessons, camps and competitions.

PacSun Custom Skatepark Course

In June of 2010, Spohn Ranch was called in to build a custom skatepark for bmx and skateboard demonstrations at PacSun’s Summer Solstice event at the Santa Monica Pier.

As the leader in custom skateparks and vert ramps for special events, Spohn Ranch delivered another great course for this event.

14th Street Skatepark in Long Beach, CA Set to Open

Long Beach, California Hybrid Skatepark, originally uploaded by spohnranchskateparks.

On Sunday, January 17th, the youth of Long Beach, California will officially have a brand new facility where they can exercise their passions and distract themselves from the hardships of living in what 1st District Councilman Robert Garcia called “one of the most dense and poor communities in Long Beach.” The new skatepark, which replaced existing equipment and expanded upon the site’s footprint, is a 8,000 sq. ft. hybrid style skatepark, consisting of TrueRide ramps and pre-cast Spohncrete features.  To see more shots of the skatepark, click the photo above.

Despite some initial community opposition, the skaters and their advocates fought hard to show that a new facility was a much-needed addition to their neighborhood. “One of the first things I told the city manager is that I want to make sure that we build that park, because I’ve seen the power and impact it has had on that community,” Councilman Garcia said. For the vulnerable youth of Long Beach, providing more safe places to skate is a great way to keep them active and out of trouble.

Now with all of the construction and landscaping complete, the new skatepark will be a source of pride for the community and its skaters for decades to come. The park’s official grand opening is set for Sunday, January 17th, at 1pm. The day’s festivities will include professional skating demos and speeches from Councilman Garcia, lead skatepark advocate and former Councilman Mike Donelon, and Mike Vallely, a professional skateboarder and Long Beach native. Councilman Garcia will also announce his plan to name the facility the Michael K. Greene Skatepark after Black Mike, an influential Long Beach local who was shot and killed a few years prior.

Here’s to more positive recreational spaces in the City of Long Beach! RIP Black Mike.

1-Year Anniversary of LA Skate Plaza

LA Skate Plaza, originally uploaded by spohnranchskateparks.

This past week the Ambassador Series honored the 1-Year Anniversary of the grand opening of the LA Skate Plaza in Wilmington, California. Big thanks to Element Skateboards, HOT 106, X-Games winner Jake Brown, and especially the Ambassador Series who all helped put together this event for the youth of Wilmington.

In 2008, Spohn Ranch teamed up with Maxwell Billieon of the Ambassador Series and professional skateboarder Paul Rodriguez to create a truly amazing skatepark for the city of Wilmington. One year ago, the LA Skate Plaza officially opened with largest launch in the history of Los Angeles, with almost 4,000 skaters in attendance.

Since then, the park has averaged 250-300 skaters a day, has become a drop-off location for seven neighborhood schools, and has helped reduce violent crime in the area by 90%. Spohn Ranch looks forward to many more successful years in Wilmington, as well as helping communities around the world provide more recreational spaces for kids to safely pursue their love of skateboarding and action sports.

Spohn Ranch Skateparks: Design. Build. Come together.

NEW WEBSITE UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Spohn Ranch began as a community, anchored by Aaron’s backyard half-pipe, and grew into a renowned nationwide skatepark design/build firm. The creative culture of Aaron’s backyard gave birth to many companies, careers and artistic creations, including Spohn Ranch’s original “S” logo and red, white and blue color scheme. It’s treated us well over the past twenty years - becoming an iconic symbol of skatepark innovation and ingenuity.

We are always evolving though, and after 20 years of successful business, we felt it was finally time that the graphic look and feel of our brand evolve as well. Over the past several months, our team has been working hard to find new ways to express our company spirit and values, culminating in a new and improved Spohn Ranch brand.

We’re eager to unveil our new look, but one of the most involved parts of the rebranding effort – the website – is still a few months from completion. In the meantime, we hope you’ll stay connected as we embark on an exciting journey in 2013.

It will be a big year for us as we continue to push the limits of skatepark design and construction with sculptural masterpieces across the globe. The first phases of our biggest project ever, over 400,000 square feet of design/build will also be coming to fruition in the mountains of West Virginia this year.

What we’re most excited about though, is that our skateparks will continue to help us achieve our grander vision - tearing down walls, forging communities and bringing people together.
